Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

Image is from this Bloomberg article, depicting world oil inventories plunging towards the operational floor at which pipelines and refineries cease operating, which is expected to occur in September at current rates.

A pretty short preamble below, in spoiler tags.

summaryThe conflict continues to be kept at a relatively low level despite Iran's fiery encounters with US destroyers. I think it's only becoming increasingly obvious that the US is trying to cobble together some major clandestine operation mixing special forces, the air force, and naval destroyers to either seize Iranian uranium, take control of Iranian seaports, or both. Given a) how the Istafan op went, b) further Iranian preparations around sensitive sites, and c) a seeming strengthening of Iranian air defense around the Persian Gulf (multiple drones and manned aircraft have squawked emergency codes and potentially been shot down over the last few weeks), I find it difficult to imagine this operation fulfilling its objective, and even if did somehow work, why the removal of uranium would necessitate Iran ending the blockade and the war. On that note, I've seen reports that Iran is saying that if the US attacks their oil tankers again, they will resume firing on US military bases.

Additionally, Aragchi has stated that not only has Iran's missile/launcher stockpiles not gone down from pre-conflict, it has actually increased by 20%. This is unsurprising given the total war that Iran is now in; all resources within reason must now be funnelling towards drone and missile production.

Atrocities in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon are continuing. The toll that FPV drones are taking on the common Zionist soldiery are quickly becoming apparent, as we are receiving ever-increasing amounts of footage of vehicles and gatherings of soldiers being struck by Hezbollah's drones. The casualty situation is, as expected, being hidden, but any kind of serious occupation of even the border villages of southern Lebanon (let alone up to the Litani) seems unsustainable.

The Zionist Entity's Genocide of Palestine

If you have evidence of Zionist crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against the temporary Zionist entity. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

I didn't realize you were a Venezuelan dock worker

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

All reporting I have seen shows no oil from Venezuela has gone to Cuba since the attack in January, and it has instead gone to Israel and the US. Do you have evidence to the contrary? Nobody has disputed any of this reporting in the Venezuelan government.

You again mistake positionality for being correct.

[–] Jabril@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Your claim is that all oil is going to the US and Israel, the burden is on you to prove that. It isn't my responsibility to entertain your strawman. Diosdado Cabello indeed refuted the claims about Israel.

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

"Refuted it"

It was sent to a US facility and then sent to Israel. It was "refuted" because they didn't send it directly. Wow.

[–] Jabril@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So again you aren't going to back up your claims that all oil from Venezuela goes to the US and Israel? Ok just making sure you are still making the same arguments while not once providing evidence for them. Very serious material analysis to read headlines from US propaganda outlets and parrot them like your job depends on it

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They are articles that have been posted here. The Russian tanker was the only one to reach Cuba since the blockade has begun following the January attack on Venezuela, hence why it was such big news. Venezuela has not even attempted to send any oil since that time.

[–] Jabril@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You are changing the claim from "Venezuela's oil only goes to the US and Israel/ it is controlled entirely by the US." Why are you changing the claim? I can only wonder why people do things like that, can you help me understand why you are changing after being pressed over and over to prove what you claimed? Why can't you show how all of Venezuelas oil is exclusively going to the US and Israel even after being asked numerous times over multiple weeks?

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

No I'm not and you are deliberately being obtuse. Arguing with you is like arguing with a pidgeon that knocks over the pieces on the board. You will not accept information or points. I make unremarkable claims that everyone in this thread has seen the news articles on and not one government on earth is disputing. Not cuba, not venezuela, not USA. Venezuela is subservient to US interests and obeys US orders, their entire oil fund is controlled by the US. You have never addressed this.

[–] Jabril@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Yes, you read bourgeois headlines and take them as facts, assume all the details since those articles make claims with any evidence, and ignore all the other examples that counter your preferred narrative, the US imperialist narrative. Just as we have seen the headlines you are treating as facts, many of us have also seen the ongoing and blatant disinformation campaigns which only seek to undermine unity and create division within the movement. This is the same playbook they use everywhere, we all have also seen this tactics before. Your argument is "Venezuela and Cuba didn't refute me, I must be right," while you ignore what they themselves say on the subject about their unity in struggle against imperialism and against the specific narratives you are very keen on innoculatng this website with for some reason. Venezuela is a socialist project run by the same party for a very long time and has popular support. The tactical defeat of being forced by the Mafia to pay them a cut in order to sell some of their oil is not some collar being put on the Venezuelan people as you continue to condescendingly imply. The only person subservient to the US are the ones doing their ideological work, and juxtaposed to the socialists of Venezuela who continue to struggle against imperialism, you are really firmly on one side of the ideological line

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Keep killing the messenger and there will be nobody to deliver anything into your echo chamber. Bad news does not mean that I am evil for telling you it. This is a fundamentally childish worldview.

[–] Jabril@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

You are not the messenger of bad news, you are the parrot of imperialist messengers. You have never provided any news here, how absolutely revealing of your self perception. Other people post links to news and analysis and you make lib commentary devoid of material analysis and somehow think you are a messenger of any merit. You think you provide news when all you do is repeat headlines written by crackers and act like they are true. Your reading comprehension is abysmal and you are incapable of not inserting the bullshit your brain makes up to everything you read. Very imaginative and unlike a child to just make things up and read headlines and think you understand the world
