Why is the Canada Pension Plan investing in projects to improve the US in the first place? We should be improving our own lives and infrastructure.

[–] GreenBeard@lemmy.ca 36 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Because traditionally, wealthy Canadians don't invest in the rest of Canada, they invest in Britain, the US or the EU. Canada doesn't grow very fast so value grows slowly. Of course, the reason Canada doesn't grow very fast is Canadians don't invest in Canada. Kinda one of those "vicious cycle" things.

The Canada Pension Fund is NOT for rich people to use. It's mandated by the government to make sure that the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) funding for retired and disabled Canadians is adequate for our needs.

Quick question, who manages the funds? Is it us? Or is it a bunch of wealthy finance bros "because obviously they know how to make money."

[–] girlfreddy@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago

The fund is managed by the federal government.

Read up on it.

Geographic diversification is the stated reason. At least it's green infrastructure. Hopefully they take the project somewhere better.

Why is the vast majority of our PM's investments in the USA?

Mark Carney has investments in 567 organizations. Only three are Canadian

Because Carney was always a fiscal conservative piece of shit. Not a literal Nazi piece of shit like Poilievre but not far off.

Can you blame a guy for wanting to make money?

You know those lines on maps aren't real, right?

Oh it's Lemmy, have to draw it out with crayons: a windfarm, anywhere, improves the lives of Canadians.

Because they're being sound financial managers. Their job is to fund the pension plan. I'm glad they're not subject to political interference.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

-> not subject to political interference

-> has $120M stolen by the country that steals everything from everyone

Uhh, sure...

By political interference they mean planning the project, starting the project l, ect ... not things that happen after the project is already started

[–] dermanus@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago

Canadian political interference. Would you rather future governments gamble our pensions on pet projects?
