Don't get me wrong, the logic on display here is foul, but I don't buy into the idea that standing by and letting an evil thing, that you could prevent with a completely infinitesimal effort, happen, is meaningfully "better" than doing it yourself.
If option A is "victim on main line, subject fails to pull lever" and option B is "victim on branch line, subject pulls lever" I don't think subject B is any different from subject A, both of them bear full moral culpability.
