at least some commenters made the point that a "nation" is abstract and "existential" threats to it are also abstract. as in, why the fuck should i give a shit unless that abstraction benefits me or the people i care about.
if a van with guys in it tries to snatch me off the street to die for the US, they'll never find those guys.

You're failing to understand that actually, the state is like the droid core ship in The Phantom Menace. When it's destroyed, all of the citizens immediately make a beeeeeewwww powering-down noise and drop dead on the spot
These guys take the Putler thing very seriously. They think that if the Ukrainians lose Putin is gonna put every Ukrainian speaker into a death camp, then genocide every non-Russian European afterwards
