I'm actually rather astonished that her accent is so heavy and her diction is so stilted, after living in the US for 30 years. It's as if she doesn't have to speak to anyone in English. She also seems to have trouble pronouncing words correctly, even when they are written for her.
She has no friends
For years, her and Barron spent most of their time with her parents, also illegal immigrants, and they all spoke Serbian. Word was that when Barron started school, he could barely speak English, and he spoke it with a Slavic accent.
They speak the Slavonian dialect of Serbo-Croatian.
Hey? If you don’t have any friends or you don’t have anything to say, how do you get to know how to speak foreign language?
I already speak English, French, German, Sesotho and Japanese. Do they count? I have also taught ESL and married a Japanese woman. I know something about accents and fluency.
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean you. I meant that mail-order wife.
Ah, okay.
It probably doesn't help that the last person she wants to talk to is her husband.
