If you look at the far end from the camera, how the vertical 2x4 is attached, I don't think there's any way there are hinges involved. My guess is that if/when he has to access the engine, the whole thing can lift off.

you look to be right!! they do not look to be able to accommodate a hinge. we weren't able to find a photo of the area of interest unfortunately.
