Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Lest we forget, the UK was fully aware that the start of the war was a lie so I'm keen on keeping the UK at an arm's length. Trade, absolutely yes, defence, only partial integration should be allowed. Keep AUKUS in mind, they will backstab us at the first opportunity.

EU is making somewhat similar deals with Canada and Japan who have joined the EU SAFE program.
But yes I agree UK has some unfortunate exceptionalist tendencies, some Brits think that commonwealth makes them an empire. At least they behave that way.
Also the commonality with other English speaking countries seem to make them think they are more important than they are, as being part of a club makes them special.
Exceptionalism was a major part of the thought process behind Brexit.

I have predicted the shitfuckery with success for two decades now

I'm so tired of being right

This incursion into Iran was a distraction from further atrocity in Palestine, but more importantly, a land grab from Israel into Lebanon and when they get away with that, there will be further "settling" of surrounding areas while the West either ignores it for fear of being labelled bigots, or continues to quietly support it because it is beneficial to have an attack dog in the region, even if it is now the tail wagging the dog

Israel wanted to move aggressively and needed the eye of the world to be elsewhere, or afraid of the accusation of antisemitism

There will be a protracted land war in Iran which will provide a reason to suspend all elections in the US, so there will be no midterms that would overturn the current state of affairs

If Drumpf lives long enough, it'll be cause to suspend the 2028 election, and after that, all bets are off

I'm desperate hoping that I'm wrong

Elections solve nothing in the US. Obama bombed more brown people than Bush Jr, he just had better PR. Black people were still murdered by the cops like nothing during dem rule and there is still no universal socialized healthcare in the US. The problem with the US is not Trump, is that the majority of the country is closer to being like Trump than they are civilised people.

The IRA from Biden and the war in Ukraine were a carefully planned attack on EU's energy independence and decoupling.

Shit has hit the proverbial fan and we have only two choices:

  1. We get rid of the billionaires (through taxation) as a cautionary tale for future humans to maintain a glimpse of civilisation and repeat the French revolution Europe wide.
  2. We let the situation continue to degrade to the point where WWIII becomes a reality.

I agree

I find it hilarious when the Dems are decried as "radical leftists", because even AOC and Bernie Sanders are merely regarded as "yeah, but ain't that shit obvious?" to the civilised world

I spend quite a bit of time in the US, and I don't consider it a civilised society

I see people literally step over people who could be helped if the people of the country wanted them to be helped

There is so much wealth in one country, and that people die from rationing insulin is obscene

That's not a word I use lightly, but what I see in the US is sickening to me

And that's just one of the many problems...

I'd advocate for guillotines, but sadly, I have no faith in the American people to actually use them properly

The people at the bottom are already armed, and they're not doing anything except hurting other people in the same situation

The US has more "guillotines" than they do people, but the population still don't understand how to direct them
