The reframing of this conflict as a """"religious"""" conflict is usually by white, western liberals who are too smug to admit they have no clue what they are talking about, and instead find solace in racism against the "barbarians". It's unfortunately very common with them.
This has been a strategy of the European right for a very long time. "We are not racist, we are anti-Islam." It got huge with the war and mass displacement in Syria.
It's very telling that Muslim = Arab to them even though 80%+ of Muslims are non-Arab
