Hi all,

I just set up a new community for trans people who want to make their own clothes. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, it's right over at /c/transsewing@lemmy.blahaj.zone.

I cleared this post up with the mods and they agreed I could post this.

this is great, but because lemmy is so small and there are so many slow or inactive communities, and because sewing is not really trans-specific, I also encourage anyone here who enjoys sewing to also post in the larger craft and sewing communities like !sewing@lemmy.world

I think there's some trans specific aspects of clothesmaking, because our bodies do not always fit the expectations of cisgender clothes designers, tool makers, etc. leading to specific questions around finding suitable patterns if, say, you're a tall transfem (it me), or finding suitable mannequins if you want to shell out on one of those, or whatever.

So that's why I think having a community specifically for trans sewers is nice.

cis women can be tall too! in fact many cis people i know find their bodies don't match those expectations either. with regards to discussions of sewing, contributions from cis people could absolutely be helpful for many trans people, and vise-versa. plus, even those who are cisgender may wish to wear clothing that is not in line with societal gender expectations to begin with!

but that is simply my view on this. what matters is you're trying to relieve this predicament so many people find themselves in, so thank you for your continued efforts :)

that makes sense, I just suspect the larger Lemmy sewing community would be fine with trans-specific content; one of the top posters in that community makes clothes for barbies for example 😅

and we benefit from a larger and more active community more than pre-sorting ourselves into many, mostly dead communities

but it's easy to x-post, so hopefully activity in both communities will benefit from one another🤞
