Linux security updates are something you can accept on your own time at your leisure. They tell you what the update corrects. Windows on the other hand.....the space shuttle crash landed in lake Titicaca Peru after a windows update during descent.
Or...my mouse started behaving erratically and my keyboard is not compatible anymore after windows update. Windows it garbage.
In our labs we have specific devices that were designed to work only on goddam windows fucking 98. We keep those computers unplugged from the internet primarily for the purpose of not receiving updates. Let that sink in! The number 1 virus to avoid from the web in the most important lab for our company is windows update! And if the computer must get new anything they keep a windows 98 copy so we can update to the original crap.
In all new devices we are now requiring Linux compatibility and Python interface. If you sell a widget without those two requirements it basically is non existing to us. Sure, we're a tiny company, but that's our recipe for success. Linux for stability and IT security, Python for compatibility between devices and automation.
For example, we may have a system comprised of a heater, a vaccum, an oscilloscope etc. Now you can create a single Python scrip to apply heat for cycling an assembly or cooking a sample while the vacuum system pulls down the atmosphere at critical moments or to guarantee no oxidation etc and the scope can read a feedback voltage or a resistance or reactance. All automated and we don't have to worry about some good for nothing asshole at Microsoft deciding that tonight he's shutting down our very important experiment or process. Linux protects us.
