Didn't he have his answer already? Dude #1 already said they all were "clear as a bell," meaning not a damned thing could be seen in them since bells usually aren't clear.
Ploy twist, they're looking at sound samples for a moving picture.
Thought I made it obvious how broken my head was already, yet here you are pouring salt in the wound...
Adversity builds character. Or it results in psychological trauma that can be crippling for life. :-)
