I'd heard that the Alan Grant character was based on him, but I didn't know it was because they'd both hooked up with their grad students.

Back when went to uni for paleontology one of my profs also did that. Must be a fad.

during my time in school, there were two known instances of a prof getting with graduate students.

  1. was a hush hush secret where the prof only admitted things behind closed doors. administration kept it under wraps (everyone knew because he was accused by multiple students for favortism and creating a toxic work environment), asked him to resign, and helped secure him professional recommendations so he could exit quickly by going elsewhere

  2. was the professor getting caught drunk hooking up at a conference with a grad student and apparently feeling so ashamed (young wife, home & pregnant) he confessed publicly. the administration shit canned him on the spot and he was cooked, professionally. the local city paper ran a story about him even, and everyone knew all the details.

the differences in how administration handled each case was very eye opening. zero concern for the students or staff of each, maximum concern for institutional reputation management. basically, a bright neon sign saying "never admit to anything in public".

He married an undergrad which is even creepier.
