I had two different reactions to your comment simultaneously.

First, yeah the meme is political but you went hard on the American angle. But the image is of israel, it says israel in two places, it's joking about the pope which is not an american thing, and then it mentions the name of a dead american.

Second, I just don't think Lemmy has enough users and enough content to be picky and granular about categorizing all memes into the appropriate community. And that's before we even get into the realities of federation and how there could be multiple active "memes@*" communities.

First yeah sorry, I agree this one is more political than American, I guess I'm asking if I can expect to see more American and political memes in this community in general

Second, I just don’t think Lemmy has enough users and enough content to be picky and granular about categorizing all memes into the appropriate community. And that’s before we even get into the realities of federation and how there could be multiple active “memes@*” communities.

I 100% get why you think this, Lemmy is for the most part dead, there's maybe 30 or so 'active' communities and then participation drops off pretty hard and fast, and the few active comms are left wing progressive/Linux/Queer related, not like Hobbies/random things to discuss, there's almost 0 niche comms here

But my biggest problem is that despite the tiny size I feel like we're making it even worse by throwing American political shit in with everything

If you enjoy funny jokes for example and you went to the funny jokes community or whatever and threads were like:

non political funny joke

who is dumb? DONALD TRUMP! LOL

non political funny joke

REPUBLICANS ARE STUPID LOL

DONALD TRUMP SUCKS LOL

non political funny joke

non political funny joke

ISRAEL IS BAD NOT A JOKE

WHY NO AMERICAN HEALTHCARE NOT A JOKE

non political funny joke

and you weren't a left wing progressive American you'd get pretty annoyed, how many people are we fucking off just by having our loudest members of the community hog up the most visible comms?

This place is tiny and yet I've seen loads of people now commenting about how they hate, well let me quote this came up yesterday:

https://piefed.social/c/fedimemes/p/1825718/hurts-every-time

As for the reason for this decision, it’s because Lemmy and the Threadiverse in general didn’t turn out into what I envisioned it would be.

For a hot minute it was honestly great but eventually all that remained was tankies propaganda and depressing news. And probably a few non-political communities that sadly don’t really offset it for me.

Anyway I'll leave it there but nice comment ty

edit: I just realised this place already has a rule for this:

  1. No politics

This is non-politics community. For political memes please go to !politicalmemes@lemmy.world

There are so many comma splices in there.
