Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts recently endorsed taking care away from transgender adults, saying in an episode of the PBD podcast that the organization is currently "running the numbers" on the supposed correlation between gender-affirming surgeries and violence. His proposed solution? "You outlaw it."

"But where there continues to be disagreement is on what you do with adults. At Heritage, we believe that so-called transgender surgery is bad for anybody because of what you saw in Rhode Island yesterday," Roberts said, referencing the Monday mass shooting that left three people dead, including the shooter, and three others critically injured, all of whom were related to the shooter. Police have described the attack as targeted and domestic in nature.

"There does seem to be a mounting body of evidence that suggests a correlation between that surgery at any age, mental health issues, and increasingly, although we're running the numbers on this at Heritage, acts of violence," Roberts added, falsely.

Why is it this? Why do we have to make this shit news? Why not “Young Doctor Wants to Improve Healthcare”, or “Environmentalist Wants to protect Our Forests”?

This shit gets shared everywhere because we seem to love using these assholes to piss each other off. It’s like everyone wants to be angry.

He’s a piece of shit racist homophobe. Who fucking cares what he wants?

Are you fucking kidding me? Evil people are publicly stating their planned intentions to harm people and you’re asking why we don’t ignore it to focus on fucking sunshine and rainbows?

Sticking your head in the sand will not protect trans people from one of the most influential policy makers in the US.

Choosing not to get brow beaten 24 hours a day is not sticking my head in the sand. If you like being pissed off all day, by all means- scream this shit at as many people that will tolerate it.

I’m just not a fan of standing around being pissed off while those the could stop it- won’t.

A piece of shit racist homophobe who is DIRECTLY AND INTENTIONALLY WRITING US POLICY FROM AN UNELECTED POSITION. Trump is enacting all of project 2025.

If you can't figure out why this matters, idk bro.

People in power are following the plans laid out by this group. So, it's kind of important that we know what he's saying so we know what to expect and fight against.

I agree that no one should be giving him or what he has to say attention, but under these circumstances, I think that would be dangerous.

Buddy, I don't like the culture of ragebait that the Internet has fomented either, but this isn't that. This is an LGBTQ magazine reporting on an influential figure's intentions to disenfranchise every trans person in the US.

The news in its ideal form exists to tell you about important things that are happening, not to balance itself to make you feel better about the world (and things generally are pretty terrible right now).

The examples of "Young Doctor Wants to Improve Healthcare" or "Environmentalist Wants to Protect Our Forests" are totally nebulous in what they want to achieve, ambiguous in how they plan to achieve it compared to an org that's been systemically dismantling the US from the inside for over a year, and a type of story that gets reported on all the time when it's actually consequential.

And nobody is going to do jack shit abut it, so why waste the time getting pissed about it? All this is for is to make it people angry for nothing.

you're in a politics community...

i want good news too, but closing your eyes doesn't make the bad things go away, and if you are unaware of the bad things, then how are you ever going to oppose them?

[–] killea@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

He's making policy! I wanted to put that in all caps, but I didn't. Outta respect, 'cause I understand.
