Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) added experimental PC VR support to Star Citizen late last year, taking a first step in fulfilling a more than decade-old promise. Things are getting increasingly serious though after the release of its second post-VR update.

Update Alpha 4.5 initially brought a VR theater and full VR mode to the game in December, which lets users play the bulk of the game in PC VR headsets for the first time, including walking, flying, EVA, combat, and using menus.

Granted, it’s still a (very) experimental mode, which initially required some users to even add VR config lines to the game’s directory to get it working, done in addition to keeping track of keybinds to cycle through VR modes on the fly.

Now the studio has released Star Citizen 4.6, adding for the first time an official VR option in the settings menu, making managing and enabling VR mode at startup a much easier affair.

Do y'all think Squadron 42 will get any official VR love? Pragmatically I feel like it's not worth more than bare minimum dev time to make functional, given how very few people would benefit. However... it seems that VR enthusiasts are almost guaranteed customers, and somehow have more undue influence in some cases. I guess some folks dream of enjoying the VR experience some day.

I'm of two minds on this,, and on VR projects in general ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm hoping it will get some VR love. The engine is mostly the same so any work done on SC is likely to end up in SQ42. I'm not sure how well they'll maintain SQ42 post release. I'm sure we'll see some bug fixes rollout soon after, but I doubt we'll see any major feature overhauls.

However, there were talks of plans for a Squadron 42 Episode 2 and Episode 3 release. Maybe they'll have better VR support by then which just might get them to go back and update the original SQ42 release with better VR support.
