The most likely humanity destroying event to worry about is an AI for some reason hooked up to a defence system and hallucinating an attack since they are programmed to wait for an attack to happen, it doesn't have purpose but to attack when it is attacked. If it wants to fulfill its purpose then it could just make an attack.
The one that is going to happen is that we will wreck all our water in cooling systems, use all our power to run the servers, and bankrupt towns and cities giving tax breaks to companies that cannot possibly provide jobs and economic gains to those areas to offset the loss of income from taxing the AI farms. They will close up before the 5 or 10 year tax relief bills come due and leave pollution from their temporary power plants behind when they shutter them up.
Honestly, the most likely humanity destroying event is out of control global warming which we're achieving perfectly fine without any need for AI. In fact, it can be argued that corporations represent everything we fear AI will be. These are non human entities with goals that are not aligned with those of humanity. There's a great article by Ted Chiang on the subject https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/tedchiang/the-real-danger-to-civilization-isnt-ai-its-runaway
Groks servers are powered by dozens of "temporary" power generators that are burning fuel 24/7 with no environmental protection or exhaust mitigation. Just pumping out fumes and heat into the atmosphere.
AI is global climate change and water waste in a neatly wrapped gift no one asked for.
Let's not pretend like that wasn't already happening long before AI. The entire western society is built on unsustainable consumption.
