Hello fellow Calvin and Hobbes fans!

About this community and how I post the comic strip… The comics are posted in chronological order on the day (usually) they were released. Posting them to match the release date adds a bit of fun and nostalgia to match the experience of reading them in the newspaper for first time. Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips. It really sucked when I missed a day. Only years later, when I got the books was I able to catch up on the missed strips.

Calvin and Hobbes is a daily American comic strip created by cartoonist Bill Watterson that was syndicated from November 18, 1985, to December 31, 1995. Commonly cited as "the last great newspaper comic",[2][3][4] Calvin and Hobbes has enjoyed broad and enduring popularity, influence, and academic and philosophical interest… Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_and_Hobbes

This would be the point in child rearing where lying is acceptable.

You will get everything you want but first open the door

Sometimes an adult has to break the rules to stand up against others that break the rules.

So the child would learn that you are not trustworthy and will flush the pages next time no matter what you say or offer?

The child should learn that blackmailing an adult cannot succeed. I think that would help prevent future flushes on its own.

No, afterwards you explain that the severity of the situation made it so you had no choice to lie.

Its not even about the paper, a 5yo child should not be locking doors. Children are incredibly skilled at endangering themselves in creative ways and they may not be capable to open it after. You’re number one priority is to get it unlocked.

The adult should also learn their lesson here which is to not leave keys on any door and to place those important papers out of reach.
