Explanation: Catherine the Great, Tsarina of the Russian Empire, had a... somewhat notorious libido. Certainly, she picked her court favorites according to which ones she opted to take as lovers! Such behavior was immensely scandalous in 18th century AD Europe - and since Catherine was far too powerful to simply remove and humiliate, as less-well-placed women would have been, she was the subject of a number of unsavory rumors, including one enduring which endured after her death regarding her sexual appetites and a horse. Very crude.
There is no truth to this rumor, but it still gets passed around as 'popular history' from time to time.
How do we know it's not true for sure?
Short answer: No proof.
Long answer, assuming a suspected cover-up: The story goes she was crushed to death by a horse she was trying to fuck. Her body lay in state for weeks and lots of people saw it - not something you'd do with a smashed-up corpse, at least not without people noticing and documenting.
The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence
I mean we don't know for sure that Rumsfeld didn't come up with the horse-fucking rumor to somehow justify the invasion of Iraq.
