Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

That is simply naive. In no world will age verification be done anonymously and without that information being used to collect everything you have done and said.

And no, as bad as it is now, it's not like it can't get worse, that's what this is. You are saying to surrender to tech because you already are getting fucked, and that in surrendering to tech you're not necessarily surrendering to tech, which you are.

Surrendering to tech, and by extension to the US government, and your own governments that will get a cut of the data.

These new ai threat detection systems they are setting up will have access points in areas these politicians, lower level officials, oligarchs, their contractors, organized groups, hackers, foreign intelligence agencies, etc will be able to access to. This is making everyone vulnerable to make sure your government can see what you are doing.

It's just sad the west believes their leaders right now and not what's right in front of their eyes. As I said, there is something wrong with our brains at this point, something systematically wrong because past generations would never have suffered these blatant attempts to end our freedoms of speech without a fight, whether the author had a democrat or socialist or labour title to his name or not.

Are you even from the EU? Every EU citizen has access to an eID per the eIDAS regulation. No AI needed whatsoever to determine your age privately. No AI or US company involved.

If the companies are required to verify user's age using this - and only this - way, they cannot further identify their users.

Only the government could in theory know your social media profile as a result. But there is absolutely nothing preventing them from requiring social media companies to disclose the phone numbers (and as such identities) of its users already.

Identifying every account, every ip address, with an ID and likeness, will absolutely lead to everything you do or say being recorded, and indeed is the point of these age restrictions. You can give all of the reasonings for why chat control will not surrender privacy, or age controls, but that is the entire point behind doing these, to lock down the internet. Everything you do or say will be connected to your accounts, and it will affect everything you are allowed to see online, whether you get that job, whether you get police scrutiny, how the courts treat you, etc.

Those comments you make on Israel, climate change, environmental issues, the first amongst the issues to secretly effect how you are treated.

It's not now nor has it ever been about protecting kids. Past generations knew that, our generation trusts the suits that tell them what you just said, there is no way for anyone to know, the information is totally secure and not being saved, trust us. Because if you can't trust the government, who can you trust? (Me, don't do it, it's a trap.)

Besides the fact that nearly very single account on all major social media is already identified, you are also conflating age verification with identification. Age verification can be anonymous but it depends on the implementation.

IP addresses are already linked to your identity. Or does your ISP not know who to bill every month? It's just they're not known to the government until a warrant is provided.

Who would you rather trust? Foreign social media companies controlled by hostile governments trying to turn your country fascist or your own government?

All accounts on social media are not identified at all, especially not with likeness from selfie videos and government ID. And there is a difference between the isp having that information, and palantir having it, which is the crux of this whole matter. That is the point to this, giving these ai companies the ability to run everything you say or do or look at through ai threat detection.

It's a trojan horse, and you are telling us don't worry they couldn't fit those guys in there, they did though, that's the entire reason they left it out there, and that's the truth.
