The Great Enshittification...

Edit: I am referring to the UI change. They worsened the UX in favor of their AI ads. I’m not a fan of their new AI agent stuff, but this isn’t what I was criticizing here.

As stupid as that home page looks, DeepL is one of the services that was already using "AI" and it's a valid use case. Has the functionality actually changed?

[–] kutt@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yep but he UX is the problem here, the homepage used to be the translator. Fortunately, you can fix this by bookmarking the /translator page.

I didn't complain about that huge pop-up that shifts the whole UI down so you have to either close it or scroll down, but it's becoming worse and worse.

[–] LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Ok I see what you mean. On mobile it still opens the translator but on desktop it's pretty annoying.

[–] kutt@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

I hope they never touch the mobile app ever. Upgrade the ai model? Add new languages? Sure! But please no ads or popups. Even Apple’s suite is making AI ads now…

[–] Korne127@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Well, but not GenAI in the current meaning; LLMs have similarities to it but still use a different technology

[–] LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The screenshot doesn't claim to use LLMs though. AI could be anything ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why wouldn't a language translation service not use a large language model? The service is named after Deep Learning after all.

[–] LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

Sorry, I don't get the double negative. My point was that DeepL using Ai in general is not weird or bad by itself.

Whereever someone says generative AI they are including LLMs in that.
