This shit hits so hard. My childhood horse and I said goodbye in a similar fashion and I'm still not over it emotionally. Finding a horse that you can bond so deeply with is something I can only describe as primal. Nothing else compares to it. It's a true partnership when a human and horse bond. It's a mutual respect and love that goes deeper than that between humans and other animals.
Like, I love my dogs more than life itself, but they're my babies. Our relationship is akin to that of a parent and children. My horse... She's my best friend and is emotionally and intellectually intelligent enough for me to be pretty damn sure she sees me as her best friend too. She interacts with me in a way that shows how deeply we're connected. It's one of the most magical things and I would love for more people to be able to experience it.
