China was spying on me in case I had any useful state secrets. America is spying on me because they are actively exploiting every data point in my life for profit and control.
I always thought those who believed their data was safe because the app was China based was dumb, since Google showed that they'd comply with the Chinese government to operate in the country years ago.
So why would yet another billion dollar seeking app be different because of it being a different country when they are just as financially motivated to not protect your data but make money off you.
Google refused, as a consequence, are blocked by the Great Firewall. Microslop bent the knee and continues to operate until China gets an alternative going.
Worse than spying - manipulating politics and social cohesion. Many teens have died (example: pass out challenge), right-wing governments have almost been elected out of nowhere (Romania) and mentally ill people have been preyed upon heavily.
Which could also be manipulation. Young TikTok watchers are only a fraction of the voters. The change in outcome could mainly be driven by excluding the right-wing candidate from the second election.
