The colorization really does it credit, here, in bringing the Franco-Prussian War to life. It gives it the feeling of early industrial warfare.

Also, I don't care how ineffective it turned out, the mitrailleuse will always have a place in my heart

Was it colourized? I believe a basic colour photo had been developed (no pun intended) by 1870.

The wiki page shows it as black and white, so I presume it was colorized.
