It pains me to even post this here but apparently the xbox is "retro" now. oh boy.

Anyway - my problem. I thought for sure that OG xbox games would work on a 360s, as long as they were on the backward compatible list. well, my luck, none of the ones i got work and they're all on the list. I tried updating the 360 from a flash drive, it won't detect the update. I can't find a menu option to update. I would rather not connect it to my internet to update either if possible.

I tried reformatting the flash drive on the xbox itself then moving the update folder to it, that didn't work, neither did formatting on the pc first either. I cleared the cache of the xbox hard drive (it has an official M$ 250GB drive).

It is not modded in any way.

Anyone have a fix for the manual usb update? This is a glossy xbox 360 Slim, for reference.

Update: literally the only way it would work was by creating a stupid xbox live account and logging in so it would download the update. the 7 mb update i also tried burning onto disc and flash drive, wouldn't take either one. Going to really suck when all those servers shut down. Thanks for your help yall

That’s what the current gen xbox one and series do- disc for reference, download actual game. The 360 playing older OGs still plays from the disc without download/internet. ….at least that’s been my experience. Last time i used my 360 to play OG xbox games there was no internet or downloads involved.

You were probably fortunate enough to have a console with the software emulator.

A quick look into it this morning said Microsoft offered these discs for people stuck without internet.

They also offered: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12129

Huh, neat. Ive never seen that disc before. FWIW, i had 3 different 360s, but I dont remember which ones i would have used Og xbox games on. Likely my first one- it was the original larger style that was prone to RROD, but was purchased a few years after the 360 had been released. My other two were the later slim version. I dont have specific model numbers…the only 360 i still have has been in storage for a few years now in a different country, so i couldnt even go mess with right now if i wanted to 😅
