Very up my alley for similar reasons. I had fun with it for a while but did not finish it. Mechanically the plot and the mechanics left me really confused and I was not sure what its politics were -- I was maybe getting monarchist vibes but maybe it gives you a choice between monarchist and revolutionary and I just played wrong.
Been on my "I should revisit this" list for almost a decade ノ( º _ ºノ).
I think you should give it a try, there's much to love in it. If you can handle the Frenchiness of it. It's pretty French as I recall.
