Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Cuba is the shining example of imperial resistance! The most powerful country in history used every dirty trick and still couldn't crush the Cuban people. This is such an incredible achievement.

The tyranny of American imperialism must be ended.

The world should boycott American capital. Demand the orange pdffile rapist be arrested, and tax the billionaires out of existence.

The working people of the world could achieve this in a week if we were able to organise and hit capital in its profits with a boycott.

I'm sure you mean well but unfortunately a boycott is not going to stop imperialism and its certainly not how Cuba has survived until now. History is clear that passive acts do not change systems only through organized militant resistance can real change be affected, and a boycott is the most passive form of resistance.

I really like what you're saying here, I'm very happy you made this point, I agree with you entirely 💪 well said and thanks for saying it, we need so much more of this thinking!

My thinking was that a boycott would've maybe been easier to organise, but it's just kicking the can down the road isn't it.

Only through organised militant resistance can anything be changed. You say it very well 🙌 may we spread these words far and wide, tyranny must be resisted!

Boycott sounds easier in principle, but in countries where the media are controlled by the capitalists, how do you maintain momentum once media decides to focus somewhere else? I'll always remember the example in my homeland of Spain:

CocaCola threatened to close the factory of Casbega, a very big one in Spain, and the workers called for a boycott until CocaCola announces it won't close it. For some reason they got press coverage, and there was a big enough boycott and backlash that they announced they would keep it open. People cheered, the whole thing fizzled out, and a year later or so they ended up closing it, this time quietly because media didn't care. Most Spanish people to this day don't know it ever even closed.

We need to organize in a militant manner so that our own organization doesn't rely on anyone else but ourselves. And the way to do this (if you ask a Marxist-Leninist like myself) is through communist parties such as the Black Panthers, the Bolsheviks or the Communist Party of Cuba.

Mate thank you for sharing this, that's a great example, I've seen other examples of the power media has in what is or isn't being shown, but this one is especially poignant.

That's a key point there about the movement not relying on any external power structures, well said and thanks for saying it 🙌

I'm sorry to be harsh, but I'm doing this for the sake of the oppressed, so I hope you'll hear me out.

There has never been a time in history where we were given anything. Even if the dream of a world wide boycott came to pass, what do you think would happen? Can you imagine the billionaires taking a peek, at the ones they see as ants, and say "Damn, they stopped working, guess we should give them better conditions." or would they pull out a magnifying glass and wait for the sun to raise up?

Look how they've liberalized the Left. It honestly makes me furious.

At least the Right are honest about viewing me as sub-human, but liberals want to toss me into the battlefield, and they want to be viewed as heroes for doing so.

Thanks for sharing your insights hey. As another commented pointed out, a boycott is not enough. Change can only come with genuinely organised militant resistance. Would you agree with that?

And I agree, the liberalisation of the left is disgusting. At least the right are honest about their mania, meanwhile the liberals pretend to be so morally superior while capitulating constantly.
