There are ads in those?! Why the fuck are people putting up with that?

It's like youtube. If you wanna watch a video of something, it is most likely on there. Same as discord, if you wanna chat with your mates in a game or join any kind of geek topic centric community they are very likely to have a only a discord for that.

Granted there are options to fight the power such as freetube or vesktop on linux that allow you to use the services while exposing as little as possible of yourself, but you still have to in order to participate in most places.

I haven’t watched a YouTube ad in years. Ublock origin is the way.

Me neither, i go to almost any length to avoid ads in general. The point was that i still have to use youtube and jump through all those hoops to do it in an acceptable way, because that's where the content is.

Same as discord, they are less obnoxious with ads than youtube but they are data thirsty mfers. Using a plugin supporting client allows to disable some of that and otherwise obfuscate yourself/getting at premium features, but again i would rather not use it except i have to because everyone is on there.

I am just not interested in engaging with projects that exclusively use discord for their community, so I don't.

Doesn't feel like I'm missing out.

(Guter Nutzername BTW)

Network effect. And most people's tolerance for ads is crazy high.

So those people can chat with me through a Matrix bridge while I wear my hazmat suit.

Yeah but it's exactly that tolerance that I don't understand – on an emotional level.

Sure I can rationally construct reasons for why this has developed in this way and why people got used to it, but I can't get entirely get rid of this initial "how can the third ad in 20 minutes of video not make you furious?" reaction.

I can only assume it's a frog in a pot of boiling water type situation for people that haven't just used ad-blockers since their creation.

Also a lot of people just pay for premium to remove them instead.
