I think the point is that it's interesting in the "this is getting more frightening, we're at a precipice in human history" sense, not the "wow, now this is a new atrocity" sense. Considering it really is what everyone is focusing on, can they be blamed for wanting the interesting news to be, I dunno, more life affirming perhaps.

Or were we just too bored with the news having to dig for, or contrive, frightening material

There's plenty of life-affirming news. You just gotta filter for it. There's whole communities dedicated to it. I strongly recommend curating social feeds. Keyword block lists are a godsend. There's no politics at all in my Youtube feed because those topics don't get my click.

You're not wrong, how I spend my time is ultimately on me, harder to do with the barrel of a gun pointed toward you though, but I've found my way around it with video games and friends, sometimes both, I can't complain too much really, I try to be grateful for anything that isn't just part of an algorithm
