You find world news interesting? For me that's the most boring subject anyone could possibly bring up.
"Oh, Trump's being a prick again? Didn't see that one coming. Oh, people are fighting and killing each other again? How surprising. We're still killing the planet and almost all the most prominent people in the world only care about stock prices? Shocker."
I'd rather discuss literally anything else.
I think the point is that it's interesting in the "this is getting more frightening, we're at a precipice in human history" sense, not the "wow, now this is a new atrocity" sense. Considering it really is what everyone is focusing on, can they be blamed for wanting the interesting news to be, I dunno, more life affirming perhaps.
Or were we just too bored with the news having to dig for, or contrive, frightening material
There's plenty of life-affirming news. You just gotta filter for it. There's whole communities dedicated to it. I strongly recommend curating social feeds. Keyword block lists are a godsend. There's no politics at all in my Youtube feed because those topics don't get my click.
You're not wrong, how I spend my time is ultimately on me, harder to do with the barrel of a gun pointed toward you though, but I've found my way around it with video games and friends, sometimes both, I can't complain too much really, I try to be grateful for anything that isn't just part of an algorithm
then make more posts about literally anything else...
I'm not the most prolific poster ever, but you'll notice I've not once posted anything about world news.
I also heavily curate my frontpage so as to not see any of this bullshit if possible. Some things slip through but my keyword block list is pretty robust.
I'm just trying to live without a firehose of anxiety inducing shit blasting me in the face every second of the day. Honestly, I'm getting close to shelving Lemmy like I did with all my other social media at this point. Lemmy's not bad, but I'm really starting to feel like it might be good to disconnect for a while.
I can appreciate where you're coming from. you're doing everything right.
if you want to ignore what's going on in the world, that's your right to do so. it's selfish to chastise everyone else for coping with this shit how they see fit.
it's not the community's responsibility to ensure you feel safe and comfortable.
life isn't fair, deal with it.
