What's the fucking point in doing satire these days?

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 25 points 1 month ago (2 children)

We all cope in our own ways. This post is an amazing example of how we are not immune to propaganda, so... at least there's that?

This post is an amazing example of how we are not immune to propaganda

This post isn't propaganda, though, so it's not that amazing of an example.

Yeah and if this openly and unabashedly satirical post was still being treated like legit reporting, imagine how people must react to actual propaganda.

[–] logicbomb@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Actual propaganda isn't true, though, or at least it requires an element of misleading in it. If ICE officials aren't actually concerned about people shooting them and claiming self-defense, then I'll eat my hat, as the old saying goes.

It's also not "openly and unabashedly satirical." You only think that because you recognize the source as satirical. To everybody else, it reads as clickbait.

Clickbait + true statements does not equal an amazing example of how we are not immune to propaganda.

Can be true, can be as simple as „make you think about that (so you don’t think about this)“

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Actual propaganda frequently is true, this is misleading in that it is not actually reporting news, just guessing something is true doesn't make it true, I didn't recognize the poster I went and looked it up trying to find a source and discovered it was posted by a very open satire site, and this seems like a really stupid thing for you to be trying to start a fight over.

this is misleading in that it is not actually reporting news

That's not the type of misleading that qualifies as propaganda. It has to be misleading in a way that pushes their agenda.

this seems like a really stupid thing for you to be trying to start a fight over.

This is a fight you started by saying that my original comment was me not being immune to propaganda. If you think it's stupid, then you should have chosen more correct words.

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

First: You are not immune to propaganda.

Second: I never said this was propaganda. I even went so far as to clarify that this wasn't propaganda. This is just blatant and unabashed satirical misinformation.

Third: My whole point is that if otherwise reasonable people like you fall for this, which could not possibly be easier to verify is from a literal fake news outlet (I timed it, it took me 5 seconds), I seriously doubt they will be more robust in the face of actual propaganda.

Fourth: My words are fine, why are you pivoting to insulting me to try and draw this out?

[–] kali_fornication@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

This post has five words

[–] Naich@lemmings.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I wasn't criticising the satirist, more the world that is making satire impossible to differentiate from fact.

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Nah totally, I read it as a similar sentiment to "What's the point in doing anything". If that was off the mark I apologize. I just meant that we all cope in our own ways, even if some of them are somewhat windmill-tilting-y

[–] chunes@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Because there's still plenty of wiggle room. You actually thought ICE officials were afraid of citizens?

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

In this case, perhaps to put the idea of shooting at ICE cars out into the universe without getting in trouble lol
