Every time comrade ReadFanon comments I learn new things!
I wanna do another "Uphold ReadFanon Thought" post but more general and not just neurodiverse related.
But also
Not helped by the recent changes made to limit how many pages of comments/search/etc you can get.

MOOOODS. Please gimme a dump of all ReadFanon comments
Also please gimme a dump of all comments that contain emojies
so I can make a post telling people what emojies have been most used.

I bet there are some emoji that have never been used lol
First you spin up a Lemmy instance , then you subscribe to every community, then you pull the data from your server. 😎
Is this going to give me comments from before I setup the lemmy instance?

It should I think. I haven't tested it myself but once subscribed to a community you get history from that server for the community.
So I think it's at least a partial history. It might cut off at some predetermined point but I haven't investigated how it works fully.
I setup lemmy.encryptionin.space and I'll see how it goes.
Edit: It's not working all that well. I'm not sure if I should wait, or maybe I need to ask @CARCOSA@hexbear.net to federate with me?

Yes
Thank you!

It seems to be working better now. I'm also importing comments which I wasn't before. Not sure if it is because you added me or what, thanks anyways.

Yes because hexbear uses allow list
Now I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I think you still might not get all comments, only the comments made in the communities that are now synchronizing to your instance. Communities are the vector for syncing. Users I think are synced as an extension of syncing the posts in the communities you follow. The syncing doesn't start with the user, for example, and then spider out from there. So you could end up with discrepancies in the comments between your instance and Hexbear, but it should be the vast majority of them, since most people on Hexbear stick to the local view.
With the script it's working decently. There are problems importing things when the post or a parent comment has been deleted, but everything else is getting added. Thanks for the recommendation!
Now if just hexbear would update to 0.19.15 or increase the page limit to 100...

Yeah... It's not perfect but I'll see how it goes.
I might make a script to try and see if I can kinda force it to fetch some of the comments

That's a great idea! A lot to take on but a lot of users would probably appreciate it!
