The thing is, the entire game is built around contradicting the deserter. The material conditions for an uprising have not eroded, you get to explore them in Martinaise for the whole duration of the game before you go to the final island (!)
Edit: This is one of the reasons why Disco Elysium is my favourite game. period. It's sheer hopefulness, but still a grip on the brutal reality that is the dictatorship of capital.
To me, Disco Elysium embodies Gramsci's "Pessimism of the Intellect, Optimism of the Will" really well ~w~
