Merchants from Iran's bazaars played a key role in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which brought Iran's clerics to power.

Now they may have started a movement to depose those rulers because many of the protesters want more than economic relief.

Some told the ABC they were angry about extensive corruption and decades of mismanagement and wanted an entirely new system of government.

It also occurred to me, you may want to consider moving over to Piefed if you’re not into tankie shenanigans.

How much does instance really matter? I'm new to lemmy but so far it seems like I can view content from any instance just as easily as the one my account is made on.

Also, fuck tankies

It matters only insofar as you cannot see content from any instance, only the ones your instance admins allow to federate with yours. If every instance federated with all the others we’d be flooded with CSAM and all other manner of horrific shit. If I’m not mistaken, Sopuli is pretty light on defederation.

Aside from that, people tend to make assumptions about users based on what instance they are on. I think that’s usually a dumb way of going about things, but it happens regardless.

Edit: oh and I specifically mentioned Piefed because the main Lemmy software devs are ML. Piefed is a (mostly) compatible alternative not made by authcoms.
