i had passing interest in them, but they mainly operated like gentleman (exclusively tee-hee) clubs all over europe and america in the 18-19th century, in america they would wax poetic about free markets, in russia - about liberalism, in france about how much of a dipshit louis was. It was basically national interest groups, without any overriding global priorities, with larp characteristics. so like, sure, they could get into power and start spreading in nepotism like fashion, but that's same as country club in usa today. some lodges were just as likely to go full larp about ancient egyptians and finance expeditions for mummies as they were to seek power.
