Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes
This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".
Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.
Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:
[BB] This enemy is so difficult!
or
[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Started way back with the original Demons Souls when that launched with the physical game manual included along with the soundtrack. It was certainly a wild experience trying the first of what would become a whole genre back then when everything was a God of War, Uncharted or Cod ripoff.
I think it’s mostly my early exposure to the games and getting to see them evolve that has most affected my experience with new souls games.
Wish they would have continued with the intricate and interwoven level designs instead of the inevitable generic open world. Removing the solo invasions also took a lot of the fun away from the original games.
Also started with PS3 Demons Souls and can only agree with your assessment. I really loved the world design in demons and dark souls, especially the latter, and i hope Froms next game will return to the not really open world style of ds1. I also miss the covenants and invading solo hosts. I got really into pvp in all the dark souls titles but bounced off hard on ER
I wouldn't say Elden Ring's open world is generic. It does still have a tightly controlled progression and isn't literally "you can go anywhere at any time," and has little other similarities to the bog standard open worlds of Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, etc.
And, also you can be invaded as a solo player if you want. Go down below the balcony in the Roundtable Hold and kick the shit out of Albrect for the Taunter's Tongue. Now you can get invaded by two bad red men while the co-op players only get 1.
