Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

I was just watching a video about how the current RAM shortage might have an influence on when the new console generation will be coming out, since console manufacturers are just as reliant on access to RAM as other branches are, and was thinking that if it weren't for consoles, I probably would never have found my way into this genre.

I got a used PS4 in 2017 and slowly chipped away at games here and there, mostly sticking to sales and PS+ games. One day, I realised that I had Bloodborne in my collection, which a former friend of mine had been telling me about for some time by then, so I tried it out and bounced off it quite hard. I didn't get the game, I didn't get the genre, I felt like it was too hard - nothing new here. But then I got back into it a couple years later, moved on to Sekiro, and the rest is history.

That said, I feel like my first soulslikes being Bloodborne and Sekiro majorly dictates what I like and what I don't like about certain soulslikes. I like fast-paced combat, I like challenging but fair bosses, I like lore that's a little more explicit and not too "guess-worky". So it doesn't surprise me that, while I do like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, I'm not as engrossed with them as I am with Sekiro, Bloodborne, or Lies of P, and that I enjoyed Khazan too even though, at times, it feels more like DmC than a soulslike.

Did your first soulslike influence your taste in soulslike? In what way? Curious to hear your thoughts!

Idk I started on Dark Souls and only branched out from there. My favorite soulslike has to be either Hellpoint or Salt & Sanctuary. But if its a soulslike I'll try it no matter what it is. I think Remnant was the only one I felt tricked on, it didnt feel.like a soulslike at all but seemed to be marketed as one.
