Are you not able to enjoy something just because it's not exactly like the game? Talk about a tough crowd.

[–] Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Not at all. I never mentioned anything about the show needing to be exactly like the game.

If anything I was referring to the general aesthetic, world building and tone of the presentation.

I would be fine with a loose adaption as long as it wasn't generic and the writing wasn't primitive.

Check out the no mutants allowed forums. There are a shockingly large amount of "fans" who hate a majority of the games. None of them like more than 3 games, most only one or two, and they all hate the show. But none of them can articulate why or what is getting ruined. They can't give any specific examples, either. They just all complain that they're ruining everything and pat each other on the back without ever saying anything.

But none of them can articulate why or what is getting ruined.

That's not true at all. I provided some context around why I think the show is not interesting:

[A lack of] an independent DIY spirit, a b-movie aesthetic, lots of gore and guts, but also subtlety and nuance.

I also didn't mention anything about the show ruining anything. I was merely explaining why I like New Vegas and I find the show to be subpar.

They use puppets for crying out loud. How much B-movie do you need? And yeah the politics are pretty blatant of what led to the end, but there was definitely nuance to what happened after. I thought it was pretty clear that after the bombs fell, you have to do whatever it takes to survive. And one character became that life, another grew up that life, while another is just now learning that life. I'd say that's pretty nuanced.

And the naivety of Lucy is always contrasted by a more down to earth character with more experience.

The political messaging was comically weak; almost makes one wonder if there is some self-censorship going on, although it's much more likely that they just don't give a fuck. It's like in the Alien: Earth show with the contrived presentation of the billionaire bro. It is so stupid. Sometimes subtlety works a lot better in highlighting a message.

I felt that it was too well packaged and slick.

And one character became that life, another grew up that life, while another is just now learning that life.

This is one example. It feels like they wanted broad coverage by trying to include a character that appeals to different elements of the market. I would prefer something a bit less by the book.

Something crazy, more fucked up, but also with satirical comedy (but not in the obvious way). More inspiration from Italian 80s post-apocalyptic movies and Albert Pyun.

Just look at the trailer for 2019: After the Fall of New York.

As I said, I don't mind people loving the show. I expected it to be not for me and that's fine.

My issue is with people saying that you can't enjoy New Vegas and dislike the show.

So you want it like a pulp movie? Is that what I'm understanding? Like machete?

[–] Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

More post-apocalytic b-movie than Machete style pulp, but sure.

I am open to alternative enterpretations, but not the super low effort social critique (that becomes almost counter productive) and the weak character writing.

Tons of them can and do articulate exactly what they dislike about the show, you are either illiterate or lying
