This article never does fully explain why, only taking the issue one step further:

Tolkien refers to Disney’s works as “vulgar.” Tolkien also believed that fairy tales had become hopelessly infantilized

It seems just a matter of personal distaste?

Disney had a great whimsical vibe back in the early days. The old tales were usually fucking grim. Both have a place to exist.

That's the thing: a story meant for little children isn't the same type of enjoyment as a story meant for adults. They are different categories, so better to be judged within their own realms, not with a one-size-fits-all metric.
