I've definitely never seen stray cats growing up but several in the last few years.
Feral cat populations are massive in a lot of places, but they usually aren't very visible. Not only are cats good at hiding, people will also just assume that a cat they see on the street is an outdoor cat unless they problems with malnutrition and health that are common for ferals are really visible.
I started noticing them after we got a cat, so that's probably a case of the brain recalibrating or something.
But I have always noticed the occasional rat or fox.
