If you live in New England I can offer an anecdote that translates this thought.

You know how stone walls are fucking everywhere? They are things. The things they are... Are a lot more of a thing than the thing they immitate.

The OG stone walls in new England were settlers literally moving glacial erratics to their property line so they could plough/farm. People thought it was an aesthetic way to demarcate property lines, so they started buying rocks to make these walls.
