Wasn't there guy who did this in the 70's, then he terrorize the people who homes he spent years breaking into and stealing stuff. Literally some people thought he was a ghost.

There was also the "Unabomber". I don't agree with his violence but his manifesto makes some good points.

Also some Japanese WW2 holdouts that did this but on small islands. They never got the order that the war was over and they were to stand down :(
