All of those were accomplished IN SPITE OF America and its prevailing culture. Not because of it.

The civil rights movement was a counterculture movement. Same with the gay and trans rights movement. They were never part of the mainstream until VERY recently (literally less than two decades) and only to the extent that the capitalist machine can co-opt the movement and commodify it in order to sell back to us the feeling of being "part of the resistance" in classic capitalist fashion, until said resistance movement loses its steam which is what we are currently experiencing.

You're falling for a performance.

Yes, but compared to what? Very few places even pretended to have the performative.

Edit: and by the standards of your argument, the same critique applies everywhere.

Yes it does apply everywhere. Good for you for noticing. Almost like I fundamentally am opposed to modern society and believe it to be inherently oppressive and exploitative in its structure.
