im surely just exposing my ignorance, but why is this technicality important? isn't magnetism inherent to electricity anyway? wouldn't they react the same because they are the same? like, electricity runs thru a wire but also creates a field around the wire, the wire doesn't contain electricity so much as direct it, yeah? from its creation by a conductor spinning around a ferrous metal somewhere?

I'm a dumb dude so someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but this is part of what proves that they are the same.

They knew for a very long time that the two forces were related, but it wasn't until later that it was proven that they're both aspects of the same Force. They used magnets to induce a current for a very long time, but just because you can create electricity by moving a magnet, that doesn't necessarily prove that they're the same thing.
