Wait, why don’t we like Platner?

Being a Blackwater merc is sus as hell, even if it was just for a short time. Not to say he can’t have changed his mind and regretted stuff, but I’m not seeing the unequivocal about face that would require. The fact that he’s walking back “being a communist” shows that enough.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Fair. Not to sound like a liberal here but I think not walking it back would be used against him to make him unelectable. And I mean Smedley Butler was a merc for a much longer time and saw how bullshit it was.

I want to like the guy but I do also understand we have been burned so many times before.

Smedley Butler was not a mercenary, he was a soldier. There is a slight distinction. Not one good person has ever signed up to be an American mercenary. He doesn't even have the "patriotic idiot" alibi, he signed up for the multiple tours with the war pigs.

I wouldn't vote for Smedley Butler running as Democrat either, another radlib imperialist. But at least he wasn't a mercenary.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 4 points 2 months ago

Yeah that’s a good point too. It’s a small distinction but an important one.

I think there’s a difference between being in the US military and being in a private mercenary outfit like Blackwater. Both are servants of Capital, but the military at least has large amounts of social conditioning that makes people view it as a service or calling. Then, when the reality hits, that disillusions some.

Doing tours in the military and then joining Blackwater is so much different.

Yeah I agree with that. The stuff Eric Prince does makes me think everyone involved with him is the devil. I do think people can change though, but I’m wary of those people being in government definitely.

We just don’t have many voices that I agree with though. Scraping the bottom of the barrel.

love to glaze literal imperialist mercenaries who are sad their benefits package wasn't as good as they were promised

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 6 points 2 months ago

Fair. I get this real hard my man.

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 3 points 2 months ago
