Welcome!

Can you imagine, years ago how the internet was before? We know Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Youtube. We knew blogger, Tumblr, Skyrock... and long before, it was the forum era as phpBB..and mail-lists.

And now with ActivityPub, we are reshaping the web, and achieving much more with lots of freedom. So thank you all, and welcome ๐ŸคŸ๐Ÿ˜

Just a little thought I wanna discuss.

Unlike the more massive social media or the real world where theres not many leftists and we are gladly more united Lemmy and its left leaning tendencies with the instances providing natural cult grouping tendencies. Add to that the matrix in groups there and we all seem to be making a thing out of how to anger each other. How to troll each other or annoy x or y instance.

I hate this.

Living in an extreme right wing nation I know no other anarchist. A few left wingers. Even the libs here are right wing extremists by the standards of a western nation. I hold dear any solidarity.

I support unions here even when everyone there is a religious fundamentalist who wants sharia law bc they still qantnto improve the conditions of the working class.

Many folks here, who again I don't have any hate for, I see intending these fights and dramas. Having the goal to be banned from x or y community or instance.

  • Why!?!?
  • What do you gain?
  • What is the desire here??

I don't see an issue. I don't believe in the bubble bs because that has always been how people have been. In the real world you hang out where you feel comfortable and avoid places you don't. I think people should do the same and block as they need. There have always been folk who only stay in a very limited sphere and those who walk the spheres. So good ideas will circulate but bs fud will not. Im a social democracy type and don't care to hear about how its ok to ignore the bill of rights just a bit because of immigants or that once the workers own the means of production we will be in a paradise. I do care to hear about interesting games and read comics and all sorts of other things. I firmly believe as long as we maximally decentralize and give maximum power for the users to control their feeds it will be great.

The constant parroting of "bubble" and "echo chamber terminology" in English language internet is extremely tiring.

Not to say these concepts aren't real, but the issue isn't as simplistic and straightforward as the polemics seem to imply.

Yeah I completely agree. Im not saying it does not happen. I think the main thing to me is the internet is no longer majority useful accurate information and a minority of bullshit. Over time it flipped and now the ratio of good information vs bull is so small its more beneficial to filter out massively. Good information has to show its merit make its way forward the way it did in the real world.

Agreed, it's rife with shit these days. Any idiots can contribute to spreading random idiocy. The engagement driven model is beneficial for tech companies' bottom lines, but it's not a good development for the public.

And even outside of that, sometimes you want qualities typically associated with an echo chamber. Even back in the day, to partake in forums you had to lurk and get a feel for the culture, which resulted in better quality overall IMO (although Fediverse is nice, a modern equivalent to forums, just a lot smaller than the totality of forums back then).
