There are actual dudes called Dick? I thought it was a nickname for Richard (I live in a Spanish-speaking country, sounds like naming your son Nacho instead of Ignacio)
It's a nickname, although someone could name their kid that if they wanted to. I don't think that is very common though.
It's like you could name your kid just "Bill" but most parents will choose William, even if they are never called that.
I have personally known people with the last name Dick, and Dicks, as well as people who go by Dick as a first name. It is definitely a thing people call themselves
It's a crime that DDD(Data Display Debugger) wasn't invented by Dick Dicks Dickinson
