there totally were liberals who at least became much more appreciative of communists once fascists started widening the scope of their killing, because the communists have consistently been their most militant opposition and that matters to some people even if they wrote off Marx, etc.

For example, Carl von Ossietzky, who supported Thälmann in 1932 Reichspräsident election, because he considered both Hitler and Hindenburg fascists.
