Chat is a text only community for casual conversation, please keep shitposting to the absolute minimum. This is intended to be a separate space from c/chapotraphouse or the daily megathread. Chat does this by being a long-form community where topics will remain from day to day unlike the megathread, and it is distinct from c/chapotraphouse in that we ask you to engage in this community in a genuine way. Please keep shitposting, bits, and irony to a minimum.

As with all communities posts need to abide by the code of conduct, additionally moderators will remove any posts or comments deemed to be inappropriate.

Thank you and happy chatting!

I've been on the internet for a long, long while, and recently the internet has been becoming more and more racist, misogynist, etc. A lot of media apps rolled back their protections of LGBTQ+ people a hot while ago, and my old home of Reddit has devolved into pure insanity. There were new subs popping up left and right that only existed just to be racist and misogynist, it was MADDENING. Before Trump got elected, subs like that would be banned in like... a month, now they're just letting that shit slide. Christ even I got banned for calling out misogyny. It's gonna be damn near impossible to abandon. There's a fuckload of communities and people there, but, oh well... But looking outside of Reddit, it feels like EVERYWHERE is a path into the alt-right pipeline, it's MADDENING. It's gotten this bad and it hasn't even completed a full fucking year, I feel like I'm losing my goddamn mind My only real methods of communicating to people have been limited to Discord and here... it's so lonely

Everywhere else has little carve outs like on leftbook. But nothing like the community we have here. I just wish it was more active here

That's the biggest issue when it comes to communities. So few people actually engage, it's sad.

What's also sad is how hard it is to get people to join. It feels like people will only relocate during the worst possible conditions, Everyone moved to Rednote because Tiktok got banned, A good chunk of people moved to Bluesky because Elon Musk bought twitter and let all the nazis loose. It's gonna take Reddit crashing for people to actually move here, it's so sad :(

It's something we should think about and discuss as a community. We've learned a lot of lessons about "lifeboating" other communities, but I think it's possible to do it right. I think we could plan ahead and possibly do it successfully when the moment comes.

I've often thought that the best lifeboating support that we should do is technical advice on how another community can build their own lemmy instance. It avoids a "too many eggs in one basket" situation, and it lets both communities remain distinct while still being able to interact easily.

I think that could be a good plan as well

Facebook has a few leftist carveouts, or had. It's been like a year since Ive posted anything on it.

Importantly, facebook will stuff topics it doesnt like, and its censorship algos are super good
