A workshop for the memes of production.
Submit new emoji here.
A good submission is:
- Visually clear at a small size (120 pixel width) [This does not mean upload the small image, this means upload the source image or full size cutout but test prior.]
- Have a transparent background to the greatest degree possible. This online tool can remove many backgrounds.
- Display a clear emotion or purpose
- If including text, should be properly sized to be readable
- "Evergreen" and not something that will be irrelevant after the next news cycle
- Formatted in PNG, GIF, or SVG to make our file optimization cycles easier. If svg initially, send svg in a seperately hosted link to WhyEssEff. Same with gif, as we render them as mp4 IIRC.
- Have proposed title as the title of the post, nothing more, nothing less.
- Post body should include a suggested category and keywords.
- Max height of 3 times the width.
Rules:
- No reactionary or reactionary-adjacent expressions. The purpose of an image is what it expresses. Some clear examples for this rule:
- Allowed: Broken fasces, burning stars-and-bars, rotated Mussolini
- Disallowed: Body-shaming, Pepes, gay-shaming the enemy (e.g. those pictures of Putin and Trump that libs love to post), certain hateful wojaks (even if recontextualized)
- If you think you have touched on a grey area, see rule 7 for how to litigate this.
- ~~Nothing Vaush-related is allowed~~
- To be honest, I broke this rule, so it's pretty much moot. Just run it by me first in DMs or matrix. Vaush is a bit of a dead horse, so to speak, so they're still generally discouraged. The qualification for a viable emote referencing his existence is more a matter of execution

- No desecration of religious imagery. This includes things like burning Israeli/Saudi flag emojis. If you can modify the flags while still accurately representing countries without including said imagery, it is much preferred.
- A grey area can be argued around whether the symbol has colloquially evolved past its religious origins (one example of this that can be relatively agreed upon is the Union Jack, which is more a symbol of colonialism if anything). See rule 7 for how to litigate this.
- Nothing sexually explicit or overtly horny is allowed
- :hentai-free:
- No sectarianism in submissions. Pro-tendency content is fine, but we will not accept content degrading specific tendencies.
- No gore, no SA, no sui-bait. Nothing that could reasonably trigger a comrade.
- If you think you're touching on a grey area with a submission, message @whyesseff:matrix.org to clear it before you post.
- DISCLAIMER: Clearing does not necessarily mean that I'll add it, just that it's alright to submit and the rules will not be the barrier to its addition

Yeah you are just a poor wittle user with no power to remove the zionist individuals on your hand selected team
I've never wielded the admin power with no input from the users and the mod team. The mod application has always been open to every user to apply and be a part of it. Regardless of differences
A system is what it produces.
looks at "holocaust emoji" and "you just want to burn the star of david don't cha" and "go touch grass six feet under"
hmmmm
Just because someone has a "M" or "A" does not mean they are not allowed to make statements about their personal opinions. Did hexbear make you write the comments that were removed outside of this specific topic or the DM harassment you did?
You should look into that "DM Harassment"
The user Beam_Brain was calling Hezbollah fascist right before October 7th, this was in summer 2023. A comment thread was locked because I called him a chauvinist. I then messaged him after October 7th and said "still think Hezbollah and Hamas are fascist?"
That's your "DM Harassment". A single message. No stalking, no harassment. Just one "you still sure about this one dude"
The user btw is better now I believe and more principled, and could attest to this being the case if you asked them.
Every one of my supposed "crimes" just vindicated me more
Again no problem against the content of your message but continuing an argument in DMs after disengaging is harassment regardless if you are right or not. We have banned people before for that, and I'm not saying this to relitigate the years of mod action against you only to say that this is not a new disagreement. Despite this disagreement you are still here today and have had years of amazing discussion via the posts and comments. My point is that as a whole we have contributed to an amazing place on the internet and one that I think we both want to continue thriving, I would like to have a post in the future where we can discuss changes in a respectful and constructive way.
I am not your enemy and there is no cabal with a vendetta against you. Only a group of volunteers with different opinions and conflicting ideas. I agree we act slowly and agree that we've made mistakes. We will continue to make mistakes as we learn, and the site has been massively harmed by actions taken too quickly, which is why we move slower to try and prevent that.
Is it your personal opinion that I should touch grass six feet under?
Is it your personal opinion this is a "settled issue" despite nothing ever coming of it? No apology to me. Constant gaslighting from admins and mods when brought up, acting in their official capacity as mods receiving complaints.
No and No.
I apologize to you for the pain, gaslighting, and disrespect. I think that the majority of users and mods here have the same material goal, and agree with you.
What specific things would you like done? So that I can better understand what actions we can take to move towards resolving this
There's two issues at play: the sitewide emoji situation/zionist apologia issue & the interpersonal behavior issue.
The more important one is just add the fucking emoji already, no compromise or half-ass version of it. Ban any users who make the same zionist arguments we have been hearing over it. Self crit about using the term "holocaust emoji" and accusing users of being anti-semites.
Get Nakoichi off the mod team and stop them from ganging up on other users with Admin/Mod tags active if they're posting their "personal opinions". It's an implicit threat. Have some type of way to internally review reports and complaints of mods/admins and actually de-mod over it. Have serious consequences and accountability. I would also like an apology to myself and other POC users here for letting it get to this point.
We are adding the emoji, the whole ass version of it.
I have sent a message to the entire team to not post personal opinions with an admin/mod account.
We are discussing what further actions to take, with all the context gathered here and in the empoc mega.
My apology is in the pinned comment I invite anyone else to make one as well or self-crit.
That would require them to use alts. The tags are always there if someone is a mod of the comm, or an admin.
Then maybe they should refrain entirely from heated discussion in the comms they moderate. Nakoichi used their authority like a wrecking ball to force through whatever take they had, coming in hot on almost every discussion.
It's one thing if a normal user does that, it's another if a mod does. Nobody can stand up to them, their "take" becomes the enforced one
