Dehumanization is a tried and true tactic in enabling genocide. Once enough people no longer see "the enemy" as even human, all bets are off. That's when people who spent 40 years carefully gardening and never bothering anyone are suddenly going bananas and rat out their neighbors, and worse...
To be fair, they were WAY overdue for a water break, maybe a snack and a nap .
